It’s no secret that the airline industry continues to face headwinds. Tight regulations weigh on productivity and costs, margins are razor thin and consumer spending remains weak, making travel light among non-business travelers. Throw in the prospect of higher crude oil prices and you’ve got an ugly sector outlook.
I watch more than 5,000 publicly traded companies with my Portfolio Grader tool, ranking companies by a number of fundamental and quantitative measures. Today, I’m ranking nine airline stocks that should not be in any healthy portfolio.
Each one of these stocks gets a “D” or “F” according to my research, meaning it is a “sell” or “strong sell.”
9 Airline Stocks to Sell Amid Stormy Skies
Hurricane Irene and flooding conditions downstate and across portions of the East Coast are being blamed for a drop in people flying out of Buffalo Niagara International Airport last month.
According to statistics compiled by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, operators of BNIA and Niagara Falls International Airport, passenger counts were down 2.57 percent in August. In hard numbers, the airport handled 252,783 outbound passengers in August compared with 259,446 for the same month last year.
“With the hurricane and floods, we kind of expected that,” said William Vanecek, NFTA director of aviation. “We expect to regain some of those numbers, but not all of them.”
Vanecek predicted the airport will handle more than 5 million inbound and outbound passengers this year.
For the year-to-date, passenger counts at the airport are still on the rise.
Through August, the airport handled 1,761,083 outbound passengers compared with 1,756,986 last year, a slight 0.23 percent increase.

PORTLAND — Travelers who use the Portland International Jetport beginning Sunday morning will experience a new terminal that developers hope retains a Maine sense of place while incorporating the efficiency and amenities of a modern, big-city airport.
They will notice local retailers, including Linda Bean’s Perfect Maine Lobster Roll and, soon, Cool as a Moose. They will soon see an aquatic display of Maine’s marine environment.
They also will appreciate a streamlined check-in process, with as many as five security screening lines.
And many visitors will arrive via a new road system and a skybridge that connects the parking garage to an airy 17,000-square-foot concourse.
Officials and politicians will mark the opening of the $75 million terminal at 9:30 a.m. today. The public is invited to a free tour from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. The first flights using the new terminal will take off early Sunday morning.
U.S. airlines are canceling flights at the fastest clip in a decade as storms from blizzards to hurricanes wallop the busiest hubs, and full planes are making it harder for stranded travelers to rebook trips.
United Continental Holdings Inc., Delta Air Lines Inc. and other large carriers have scrubbed almost 104,000 flights this year through Sept. 21, or 2.36 percent of the scheduled total. A full-year rate at that level would be the highest since 2001, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
The disruptions stem from a combination of foul weather in major markets such as New York and seating-capacity cutbacks to curb costs. When Hurricane Irene struck the East Coast in August, Cameron C. McCulloch faced a weeklong wait for a new ticket — so he drove the 3,000 miles from Seattle to Yale University to catch the start of classes.
