Medical Certificate You must pass the basic medical exam that all applicants are required to undergo, certifying that you meet the medical standards for safely operating an aircraft. More details about the medical certificate are discussed below.

Age You must be at least 16 years old to fly an airplane solo (by yourself) with a student pilot certificate, and 17 years old to get a private pilot license. There is no upper age limit, provided that you are healthy enough to pass the basic medical exam.

Time A private license requires a minimum of 40 hours of total flight time, with the national average around 65 hours before the final check ride, as well as extra time for study on the ground in preparation for an FAA written test. The length of your training depends in part on how much time you devote to it. Concentrated full-time programs can be completed in as few as two weeks or a month, while a part-time student typically takes between four and six months of flying a few times a week.

Money You can learn to fly on a budget even still, it is not a cheap undertaking. If you train part-time at a local airport, for example, plan on investing in the range of $4,000 to $6,000, with costs varying widely by region. It is a good idea to consider whether you have the funds to start training and reach your goal within a reasonable time period. However, flying only a couple times a month may have you relearning some of the material from the previous lesson. If you live near where you are flying, it is fun to see your house from the air. Once you locate it, you can see just how big or small it really is. You can also see what kind of property backs up to yours. You may find that you live near something that you had no idea you lived next to.

You may know of a great restaurant in the next state over. A plane trip is a great way to explore good restaurants and attractions that would otherwise take hours to drive to. If you play golf, you could fly to an airport with a golf course nearby and play a round.

Flying is a great way to visit friends and family. There are around 12,000 small airports in the United States. It is very likely that your long distance friends live near an airport. Once you arrive, impress them with a flight over their own house or neighborhood.

It seems strange that the taxi fare to the airport can cost more than the actual flight to a foreign land. Well that is what the low cost airlines have done to the flight trade over recent times. The business model was started in the USA by South West Airlines and now has pretty much been copied over the world with Easyjet and Ryanair dominating the UK. I have been to Italy for 99p each way and Salzburg for under a tenner and even Stockholm for 15. It s quite amazing how the most expensive form of travel bar space flight can now be one of the cheapest. There are lessons here for every type of transport and business.

If you really want to cut costs and start your business with that in mind from day one, anything can be achievable. There are disadvantages though, if you require to be booked all the way through to follow on flights it isn t going to happen. The same is true for your luggage; you will need to wait until it is unloaded then you collect it to book on your next flight. If you wait until the last minute you will find your flights are actually very expensive with even the top airlines beating the price. However if you book early especially as the flights are released, do not have any follow on flights and are not bothered about meals then you are in for some real bargains.

The ironic thing is also that the UK low cost airlines have some of the newest planes in the sky. The 737, now the low cost airline standards are ordered in there hundreds and their safety record is extremely good. It would make perfect sense that with the huge amount of extra flights per day these carriers make, that it is just a matter of time for an accident. It wouldn t be that the airlines were unsafe just a case of statistics, more flights more chance of an accident but don t forget air travel still is a thousand times safer than driving your car. These airlines have brought about jobs and prosperity for related trades too. As many fly from small airports, these once near deserted airports are now springing to life with of course shopping and other services like airport parking. Strangely enough some of the airports are easier to get to, have less time waiting for baggage, less walking to flight gates and cheaper services. Some of the big airports are now mini cities and the costs just to get there are a bigger chunk of your total travel costs.

Low cost airlines have changed the way we travel, brought regular travelling to the masses and created jobs and prosperity to the related industries. Long may this remain true!

Airbus has announced that it will build a $600 million aircraft manufacturing plant in Mobile Alabama. This is significant news and will open doors to US based commercial airlines to buy more Airbus Aircraft in the future. Alabama is quite good at attracting manufacturing facilities such as Mercedes, Nissan and other automobile manufacturers and is known for their tax incentives and pro-business stance.

It is not surprising that Airbus picked Alabama. The Boeing Company has some heavy competition with Airbus in the commercial aviation sector and the future of commercial aviation both in passenger aircraft and cargo or freighters looks bright.

The plant is slated to come online and provide many jobs for Alabama residents. Some such as myself feel Mobile is problematic due to Hurricane Season weather although this is a calculated risk for the company in any given season. With most of the other major cities in Alabama having large manufacturing plants such as the Mercedes plant in Tuscaloosa and the large auto manufacturing plants in Montgomery and Birmingham it does make sense that Mobile would be next on the list to get some economical development juice from the state.
